How to use

  • Birth year: type the year you were born to see your animal, element and stem-branch name, plus the other years that share your sign. Fine if your birthday is from March onwards.
  • Birth date: use this if you were born in January or February. The calculator compares your birthday with Chinese New Year that year. If you were born before it, you get the previous year’s sign, and the result shows the exact dates your zodiac year started and ended.

Dates are shown the UK way (day, month, year).

How it works

The Chinese calendar counts years in a 60-year cycle that pairs 10 heavenly stems with 12 earthly branches. Each branch is one of the 12 animals, always in this order: Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat, Monkey, Rooster, Dog, Pig.

  • Animal: the remainder of (year − 4) ÷ 12. 0 is the Rat, 6 the Horse, 7 the Goat, 11 the Pig.
  • Stem: the remainder of (year − 4) ÷ 10. 0 is Jia, 2 is Bing, 3 is Ding, 9 is Gui.
  • Element: Jia and Yi are Wood, Bing and Ding Fire, Wu and Ji Earth, Geng and Xin Metal, Ren and Gui Water. The first of each pair is yang, the second yin, so each element lasts two years in a row.

For 2027: (2027 − 4) ÷ 12 leaves 7, the Goat, and ÷ 10 leaves 3, Ding, which is yin Fire. So 2027 is the Year of the Fire Goat, Ding-wei (丁未).

Chinese New Year falls on the second new moon after the winter solstice (occasionally the third), so it moves between 21 January and 20 February and has no simple formula. The calculator uses the Hong Kong Observatory’s published dates for 1901 to 2100.

FAQ

What Chinese zodiac year is it now?

2026 is the Year of the Fire Horse (Bing-wu, 丙午). It began on Chinese New Year, 17 February 2026, and runs until 5 February 2027. The Year of the Fire Goat (Ding-wei, 丁未) starts on Saturday 6 February 2027.

I was born in January or February. Which sign am I?

It depends on whether you were born before or after Chinese New Year that year, which always falls between 21 January and 20 February. If your birthday is before it, you take the previous year's animal. For example, someone born on 14/02/1985 is a Wood Rat, not an Ox, because Chinese New Year 1985 was on 20 February. Choose "Birth date" and the calculator checks this for you.

Is Chinese New Year on the same date in the UK as in China?

The date is fixed by the new moon as seen from China (UTC+8), so the festival falls on the same calendar date in London, Manchester and Beijing, even though the new moon may happen the evening before UK time. Celebrations in the UK, such as the parade and stage show in London's Chinatown and Trafalgar Square, are often held on the nearest weekend instead of on the day itself.

Why do some horoscope sites use 4 February instead?

Some astrologers, especially in the Four Pillars (Bazi) tradition, start the year at Lichun, the solar term around 4 February. Official Chinese calendars, such as the one published by the Hong Kong Observatory, change the year at Chinese New Year, and that is what most people use for their sign. This calculator does the same.

How often does my sign and element come back?

The same animal returns every 12 years. The same animal with the same element, such as the Fire Horse, returns every 60 years. The previous Fire Horse year was 1966, and the next will be 2086.
