How to use

  • Birth year: enter the year you were born to see the animal, element and stem-branch name, plus other years with the same sign.
  • Birth date: use this if you were born in January or February. The calculator compares your birthday with Lunar New Year in that year. If you were born before it, you get the previous year’s sign, and the result tells you when your zodiac year started and ended.

How it works

The Chinese calendar names years with a 60-year cycle that pairs 10 heavenly stems with 12 earthly branches. Each branch is one of the 12 animals, in this order: Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat, Monkey, Rooster, Dog, Pig.

  • Animal: the remainder of (year − 4) ÷ 12. 0 is the Rat, 6 is the Horse, 11 is the Pig.
  • Stem: the remainder of (year − 4) ÷ 10. 0 is Jia, 2 is Bing, 9 is Gui.
  • Element: Jia and Yi are Wood, Bing and Ding are Fire, Wu and Ji are Earth, Geng and Xin are Metal, Ren and Gui are Water. The first stem of each pair is yang, the second is yin.

For 2026, (2026 − 4) ÷ 12 leaves 6, the Horse, and ÷ 10 leaves 2, Bing, which is yang Fire. So 2026 is the year of the Fire Horse, Bing-wu (丙午).

Lunar New Year moves between January 21 and February 20, so there is no simple formula for it. The calculator uses the Hong Kong Observatory’s dates for 1901 to 2100, calculated for China Standard Time (UTC+8).

FAQ

What is the Chinese zodiac sign for 2026?

2026 is the year of the Fire Horse (Bing-wu, 丙午). It starts on Lunar New Year, February 17, 2026, and runs until February 5, 2027. The year of the Goat starts on February 6, 2027.

I was born in January or February. Which sign am I?

It depends on whether you were born before or after Lunar New Year that year. The zodiac year starts on Lunar New Year, which falls between January 21 and February 20. If you were born before it, your sign belongs to the previous year. For example, someone born on February 10, 2026 is a Snake, not a Horse.

Why do some sites use February 4 instead of Lunar New Year?

Some astrologers, especially in the Four Pillars (Bazi) tradition, start the year at Lichun, the solar term around February 4. Official Chinese calendars, such as the one published by the Hong Kong Observatory, change the year at Lunar New Year. Most people use Lunar New Year for their zodiac sign, and so does this calculator.

How is the element worked out?

The element comes from the heavenly stem of the year. Stems change every year and pair up, so each element lasts two years in a row (one yang, one yin) and comes back every ten years. Years ending in 4 or 5 are Wood, 6 or 7 Fire, 8 or 9 Earth, 0 or 1 Metal, and 2 or 3 Water.

How often does the same sign and element come back?

The same animal returns every 12 years. The same animal with the same element, such as the Fire Horse, returns every 60 years. The last Fire Horse year was 1966.
